Volunteer Opportunities for Adults

Thanks for your interest in volunteering at Shepherd’s Table! You’re taking the first step in becoming part of our community of caring. Because we offer such a wide variety of programs, there are many ways to help. We want to help you find an opportunity that best employs your talents to help others, so please take the time to carefully fill out our Volunteer Form.

There are many reasons to volunteer, but perhaps the best one is that working at Shepherd’s Table gives you the chance to make a real connection with a person in need, to see how your act of caring can make an important difference in someone’s life. If you haven’t read a client story yet, click here and see what kind of an impact your generosity is going to make.

Volunteering at Shepherd's Table allows you to connect with the Silver Spring community in a way you may never have experienced before. Here’s a list of some of our current volunteer activities. If you’d like to be involved in a specific service we offer, please let us know on our Volunteer Form.

Meals

  • Dinner Preparation Workers: Volunteers are needed to set tables in the dining room and assist the chef as he prepares the food for that evening’s meal.
    Days: Daily. Times: 4 P.M. to 6 P.M.

  • Dinner Servers: Volunteers are needed to hand out and collect meal tickets, serve hot foods, refill water pitchers, and distribute bread, desserts, and coffee. A friendly smile and welcoming manner are great assets.
    Days: Daily. Times: 6 P.M. to 8 P.M.

  • Cleaning Assistants: Volunteers are needed to wipe tables, clean dishes, mop the floor following the dinner service, stack chairs, and fold tables. Attention to detail and an energized personality are very helpful.
    Days: Daily. Times: 6 P.M. to 8 P.M.

  • Food Pick-Up Drivers and Substitutes: Volunteers are needed to pick up food donations from area grocery stores, restaurants, and other food service establishments. All goods must be delivered to Shepherd's Table. Reliable transportation is a must, as well as an ability to maintain a gracious relationship with these important donors.
    Days: Weekdays.
Times: Mornings or Afternoons depending on donor availability.

Clothes Closet

  • Clothes Closet Sorters: Volunteers are needed to sort clothing donations. Clothing is separated into categories (men’s, women’s, children’s, etc.) and placed in the proper location.
    Days: Mondays and Fridays.
    Times: 8 A.M. to 12 P.M.

  • Clothes Closet Distributors: Volunteers are needed to staff the Clothes Closets and assist clients as they select clothing for themselves and their families. Volunteers also check guests in and out at the front desk and distribute clean towels and toiletries for the shower facilities. A friendly manner is an essential asset and the ability to speak Spanish is helpful, but not required.
    Days: Wednesdays.
    Times
    : 10 A.M. to 12 P.M.

Resource Center

  • Resource Center Assistants: Volunteers are needed to assist the Resource Center staff by distributing mail and bus tokens to clients, filing papers, and completing paperwork. People-oriented volunteers with basic clerical skills are ideal. Ability to speak Spanish is not required but would be very helpful.
    Days and Times: Daily from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M., Wednesdays from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M., and Monday through Friday from 1 P.M. to 2 P.M.
