In 1999, Shepherd’s Table decided to meet another critical need of the Silver Spring community, opening an eye clinic to provide free vision testing, glaucoma screening, and prescription eyeglasses to those without insurance. Since the lack of sufficient health care is such a constant struggle for the homeless and poor, Shepherd’s Table has secured the services of a qualified optometrist, Dr. Bernetta Davis, who performed 476 examinations last year, distributing 345 pairs of glasses.

In order to qualify for free eye care at our clinic, see if you meet the eligibility requirements:

• Patients must be adults over the age of 18.

• Patients must be Montgomery County residents.

• Patient’s total household income must be at or below 175% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

• Patients must not have medical insurance that covers vision care.

• Patients must be referred by an authorized Montgomery County Government or private nonprofit agency.

Referrals are also accepted from case workers and social workers.

After you’ve been screened by one of these agencies, you can call the clinic at 301-587-0688 to make your appointment.

What to Do on the Day of Your Appointment

1. Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

2. Bring a photo ID.

3. If you do not speak English, please bring a friend or family member who does.

4. Check in with the Eye Clinic assistant.

5. Complete the forms.

The Shepherd’s Table Eye Clinic accepts donations up to $20, but our services are 100% free.
