Babacar

Babacar Samb has come a long way, not just from his home country of Senegal, but from the troubles of addiction to a life of recovery. Sober now for over 21 months with the support of counselors from Community Vision, Babacar credits Shepherd’s Table with helping him during some of the toughest times in his life. He benefited from many of our services, including the evening meal service, the Clothes Closet, Mobile Med, and even received the eyeglasses he wears today from the Shepherd's Table Eye Clinic.
Babacar, whose friendly nature has made him a popular figure around Progress Place, is grateful to the Shepherd's Table staff for their dedication and hard work. “I thank John [Eckenrode, Director of Social Services] and Ivan [Briones, Bilingual Counselor] for their help and support throughout the years,” he tells us. “Jacki [Coyle, Executive Director] is a beautiful person. She is the right person in the right place.”
Realizing that he has depended on the community for so much, now that Babacar is healthy and moving forward he’s ready to start giving back. One of the activities that helps Babacar with his ongoing recovery is volunteering at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, located close to Shepherd's Table on Georgia Avenue. He usually spends 15-20 hours a week working there, lending a hand with various activities, from paper-making to cleaning to working in the garden, pictured above. “It helps me in my recovery,” Babacar says, “It keeps me busy and it’s a way to give back to the community.”
And even though he’ll be leaving the program at Community Vision, he plans to stick around Progress Place. But this time, he won’t need our services. He’ll be helping to serve others as a Shepherd's Table volunteer!
