If you are interested in leveraging your culinary expertise to compassionately serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness, you might be a perfect fit for this role. Among a team of skilled professional chefs, the Cook is responsible for providing support to the kitchen, ensuring that hot, nutritious meals are prepared and served at Shepherd’s Table 365 days a year. A cook would also be responsible for working closely with Chefs, the Program and Operation’s Assistants to ensure a welcoming and safe environment for all our meals guests and volunteers. In addition, cooks are responsible for assigning tasks to volunteers and maintaining a clean, healthy food service area always. The cook must follow all food service regulations and County health code requirements. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Meal Preparation and Service

  • Provides support to Chef on duty, ensuring that hot, nutritious meals are prepared and served each day
  • Ensure that hot, nutritious meals are prepared and served each day at Progress Place and though the Beyond the Table mobile meal program
  • Be willing to provide food service coverage during regular scheduled services and in emergency situations such as inclement weather
  • Ensure meal guests receive warm hospitable service with each meal
  • Ensure that meal service policies are followed
  • Monitors and responds to Meal Program communications via the telephone and email on a regular basis. 
  • Ensure that the dining room and Beyond the Table mobile meal sites are safe and welcoming environments for meal guests and volunteers
  • Help support program and operations personnel during mealtimes
  • Ensure that the kitchen/equipment/food/van/staff/volunteers are fully in compliance with health regulations during his/her shift
  • Help store and rotate all food deliveries  for current and future use
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the kitchen, dining room, dish room, kitchen prep room and all food service equipment and Beyond the Table van
  • Secures the building after the last meal service, ensure that no clients are in the building or on the grounds
  • Capture stories of photos to share with our Communications Associate for social media or our newsletter

Personnel Management

  • Greets, supervises, delegates and supports volunteers throughout the meal prep, service and clean-up
  • Encourages volunteers to engage in other service and giving opportunities at Shepherd’s Table
  • Preforms all prep service and clean up duties if absent of volunteers

Resource Management

  • Receive, organize and rotate donations
  • Ensure that health regulations are met at all times
  • Support Shepherd’s Table fundraising efforts through participation in events, kitchen tours and other ways as needed

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of food and safe food handling skills
  • Knowledge of people experiencing poverty and homelessness
  • Food safety knowledge
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Experience supervising a team of paid and unpaid support staff including volunteers
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of team
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma
  • 3 years of food service preparation experience
  • Food safety certification or ability to acquire it within 30 days of employment
  • Driver’s license and good driving record

Position Summary:

As an integral part of our Social Services division, you will assist in the daily operations and management of programs such as the Resource Center, Eye Clinic, and Clothing Closet, ensuring that our clients receive the support and resources they need with compassion and dignity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Organization and Services

  • Serves as the primary intake counselor, capturing the identity and basic demographic information of all clients and meal guests receiving services from Shepherd’s Table.
  • Staff the Resource Center in conjunction with the Social Services Team, interns, and volunteers.
  • Provide ongoing support to clients as needed while they are accessing services at Shepherd’s Table.
  • Works in coordination with Interfaith Work, Kelly Healthcare Collaborative, Pathways to Housing, and other service providers working with our client population.
  • Provides in-house crisis intervention counseling utilizing Trauma-Informed Care, Harm Reduction, and Conflict De-Escalation Techniques.
  • Assists with Shepherd’s Table participation in the annual point-in-time (PIT) survey each year.
  • Assists with Shepherd’s Table internal surveys conducted throughout the year.
  • Assists in facilitating patient scheduling and intakes for the Eye Clinic and coordinates with the Optometrist available dates and times. Works with a volunteer providing reception services for the Eye Clinic.
  • Receives and processes mail, returning all old mail as necessary and ensures that mail is given out and returned to the sender on time based on the organization’s policy.
  • Assists clients with vouchers for prescription assistance.
  • Assists clients with tokens and cab fare for transportation to shelter and other services.
  • Works with clients to access other providers and government services.
  • Maintains accurate program and client data on Salesforce and HMIS and provides monthly reports.
  • Is available to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
  • Provides translations during the Eye clinic and daily as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Social Services.

Qualifications:

  • Seeking someone with a positive approach, the ability to multitask, and knowledge of community resources.
  • Candidate must be responsible and able to work with limited supervision.
  • The ideal candidate will have no less than 1 year of experience working with homeless individuals/families.
  • They must also possess time management skills, strong interpersonal skills, and knowledge of the homeless populations and their challenges.
  • Experience collaborating with community partners who assist the homeless population.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be bilingual (preferred Spanish).
  • The selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment background check.

Education and Experience:

  • No less than 1 year of related experience is required.
  • At least two years of direct customer support experience is required.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Undergraduate/associate degree in social work, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field preferred.

Position Summary:

If you’re driven by a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals in need and have a knack for operational excellence, you may be the ideal candidate for the role of Operations Assistant/Driver at Shepherd’s Table. In this position, you’ll play a vital part in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for our meal guests, overseeing meal service operations, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. This staff member is the primary driver for the Beyond the Table Mobile Meals Program delivering meals to partner organizations daily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Meal Preparation and Service

  • Serve as the primary driver for the Beyond the Table Mobile Meals Program which sends packaged meals to partnering organizations daily.
  • Make sure that delivery vans are clean, fueled and well maintained.
  • Provide security for meal service monitoring the meal line and dining room before and during meal service.
  • Monitor the parking lot area and keep it safe and free of alcohol and drugs.
  • With the Meal Services Team, ensure that the kitchen area, food storage. area, laundry, and chemical storage area are maintained and cleaned to Montgomery County’s health code and in-house standards.
  • Ensure that the ST portion of the facility both inside and out is maintained, cleaned, and welcoming, and that health and safety regulations are adhered to.
  • Provide cleaning and maintenance coverage during regular scheduled service and in emergency situations such as snowstorms.
  • Ensures that snow and ice are removed from the sidewalks during inclement weather.
  • Provide simple maintenance repairs as needed.
  • Supervises volunteers as needed

Resource Management

  • Greet all donors with respect and kindness and ensure that all donations are recorded, and donors receive a donation slip.
  • Stock donations in a timely fashion
  • Remove trash and recyclables in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure that all trash receiving areas are clean in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

  • Current driver’s license and safe driving record
  • Ability to operate a large cargo van and minivan to make daily meal deliveries
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, crowd-control techniques, and conflict de-escalation techniques
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience with cleaning and maintaining large facilities
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations
  • Ability to work with a diverse population
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to supervise volunteers

Education and Experience:

  • 1- 2 years security and/or customer service experience
  • Driving experience and safe driving record
  • High school diploma
  • 1 – 2 years of building maintenance /cleaning experience
  • Experience working with vulnerable, adult populations and those experiencing homelessness and hunger is a plus
