Our chefs are responsible for ensuring that hot, nutritious meals are prepared and served at Shepherd’s Table 365 days a year. The chef would also be responsible for working closely with the Program and Operation’s Assistants to ensure a welcoming and safe environment for all our meals guests and volunteers. In addition, chefs are responsible for assigning tasks to volunteers and maintaining a clean, healthy food service area always. The chef must follow all food service regulations and County health code requirements. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Meal Preparation and Service

  • With the Lead Chef plan weekly food menus
  • Ensure that hot, nutritious meals are prepared and served each day at Progress Place and though the Beyond the Table mobile meal program
  • Be willing to provide food service coverage during regular scheduled services and in emergency situations such as inclement weather
  • Ensure meal guests receive warm hospitable service with each meal
  • Ensure that meal service policies are followed
  • Monitors and responds to Meal Program communications via the telephone and email on a regular basis. Return call and e-mails within 24-48 hours.
  • Ensure that the dining room and Beyond the Table mobile meal sites are safe and welcoming environments for meal guests and volunteers
  • Help support program and operations personnel during mealtimes
  • Ensure that the kitchen/equipment/food/van/staff/volunteers are fully in compliance with health regulations during his/her shift
  • Ensure that food deliveries are stored and rotated for current and future use
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the kitchen, dining room, dish room, kitchen prep room and all food service equipment and Beyond the Table van
  • Secures the building after the last meal service, ensure that no clients are in the building or on the grounds
  • Capture stories of photos to share with our Communications Associate for social media or our newsletter

Personnel Management

  • Greets, supervises, delegates and supports volunteers throughout the meal prep, service and clean-up
  • Encourages volunteers to engage in other service and giving opportunities at Shepherd’s Table
  • Preforms all prep service and clean up duties if absent of volunteers

Resource Management

  • With the Lead Chef and kitchen staff engage in the Community Food Rescue process in receiving and donating rescue food
  • Receive, organize and rotate donations
  • Ensure that health regulations are met at all times
  • Support Shepherd’s Table fundraising efforts through participation in events, kitchen tours, media interviews and other ways as needed

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of food and safe food handling skills
  • Knowledge of people experiencing poverty and homelessness
  • Food safety knowledge
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Experience supervising a team of paid and unpaid support staff including volunteers
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of team
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma
  • 3 years of food service preparation experience
  • Food safety certification or ability to acquire it within 30 days of employment
  • Driver’s license and good driving record

Part-Time Optometrist

Compensation: $60/hour

Since 1983 Shepherd’s Table has provided hot, nutritious meals and comprehensive social services to people experiencing hunger and homelessness in the DC metropolitan region. For over a decade we have operated the region’s only Eye Clinic for the Homeless at our headquarters in Downtown Silver Spring. We are seeking a new Optometrist to lead the Eye Clinic after the retirement of the Eye Clinic’s founding Optometrist, Dr. Bernetta Davis. The Optometrist is a part-time, exempt position who performs eye exams and provides excellent eye care to Shepherd’s Table clients in need of services. Optometrist responsibilities include analyzing vision tests, identifying sight problems, and prescribing eyeglasses. Ultimately, this doctor ensures the accurate diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and injuries and refers more serious cases to other doctors as necessary. To be considered for this position, you need to be a licensed Optometrist in the State of Maryland and carry your own malpractice insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive eye and vision tests
  • Diagnose defects of the eye, such as myopia, astigmatism, and glaucoma
  • Provide personalized temporary and permanent solutions to sight issues based on each patient’s specific case and medical history
  • Prescribe medications and eyeglasses
  • Advise patients on proper eye care techniques
  • Provide prescribed eyewear
  • Keep updated and accurate medical records for all patients
  • Book next appointments in cases where re-examination is required
  • Train patients on how to use and maintain their eyeglasses
  • Refer eye doctors and ophthalmologists when patients need to undergo a surgery or in cases of severe eye injuries

 Requirements

  • Work experience as an Optometrist
  • In-depth understanding of eye conditions and vision defects
  • Hands-on experience with eye examination tools, such as ophthalmoscope and tonometer
  • The ability to explain medical terms simply and calmly
  • Attention to detail

Education and Experience

  • Medical degree in Optometry from an accredited university
  • License to practice optometry in the State of Maryland
  • At least 3 years of experience treating patients
  • Experience working with a low-income population preferred
  • Bilingual English/Spanish oral language skills a plus

Cook

Compensation: $15-18  hourly

Among a team of skilled professional chefs, the Cook is responsible for providing support to the kitchen, ensuring that hot, nutritious meals are prepared and served at Shepherd’s Table 365 days a year. They are also responsible for working closely with the Program Assistant and Security Officers to provide a welcoming and safe environment for all our meal guests and volunteers. In addition, the Cook is responsible for assigning tasks to volunteers and maintaining a clean, organized, healthy food service area always. They must follow all food service regulations and County health code requirements.  Upward mobility is highly likely in accordance with exemplary performance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Meal Preparation Service

  • Provides support to Chef on duty, ensuring that hot, nutritious meals are prepared and served each day
  • Ensures meal guests receive warm hospitality with each meal service
  • Ensures that meal service policies are followed
  • Ensures that the dining room is a safe and welcoming environment for meal guests and volunteers
  • Helps support security personnel during mealtimes
  • Performs post meal cleaning in kitchen, dining room, dish room and hallway
  • Ensures that the kitchen/equipment/food/staff/volunteers are fully in compliance with health regulations during his/her shift
  • Ensures that food deliveries are stored and rotated for current and future use.
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the kitchen, dining room, dish room, kitchen prep room and all food service equipment
  • Monitors and responds to Meal Program communications via the telephone and e-mail on a regular basis. Return e-mails within 24-48 hours.
  • Assists in the packaging and transport of meals to our two outside distribution sites in Aspen Hill and Riverdale
  • Secures the building at the end of food service. Ensures no clients are in the building or on the grounds
