Apply to Serve on the Board of Directors

Shepherd’s Table maintains an active and engaged board of directors. The board consists of community members from diverse backgrounds who bring an array of skills and perspectives to their board service.  Board members are passionate about Shepherd’s Table’s mission, vision, and values, and through their service, seek to advance the organization’s impact in our community. Board members are not only committed to supporting the work of Shepherd’s Table, but they also contribute new ideas and initiatives that can enhance the critical role that Shepherd’s Table plays in supporting our County’s most vulnerable residents.

People who are interested in serving on Shepherd’s Table’s Board of Directors may apply by 11:59 pm Friday, September 29, 2023. Applications are reviewed in October and November. Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Nomination Form due and are there any extensions?

This form is due by 11:59 pm, Friday, September 29, 2023. Due to volume, the deadline is firm for all applicants.

Board members serve 3-year terms, and if in good standing, a member is eligible to run for one additional 3-year term.

New member orientation will be on a Saturday in late January or early February 2024.

Board meetings are typically held every other month in the evenings from 7-9 pm. For the last several years, the Board has met virtually. Normally, the Board meets at the Shepherd’s Table office in Silver Spring.

Committees typically meet every other month during months when the full Board does not meet.  Each committee determines its meeting time.

Yes. According to the bylaws, Board members are encouraged to support Shepherd’s Table by making a “significant” donation, as each is able, to its continued operation. Members are expected to give or raise a minimum of $1,000 during the calendar year. Tickets to major events such as the spring and fall fundraisers do not count toward that $1,000 obligation. If a Board member’s personal circumstances require an adjustment to the financial obligation, a confidential consultation is available.  There are many opportunities for giving beyond the minimum commitment, but you are not expected to respond to every solicitation. We value the many contributions of board members, including financial and in-kind donations.

Yes. Participation is expected at the following events in addition to new member orientation and alternate monthly full board and committee meetings.

  • The annual marquee fundraising event, such as TableFest, an annual neighborhood block party in Downtown Silver Spring hosted by Shepherd’s Table. TableFest brings together Silver Spring restaurants, music, and entertainment in support of Shepherd’s Table.
  • The Board hosts an annual “Bright Meal,” which is a special dinner in December for Shepherd’s Table guests. Board members are expected to help support the cost of the meal, and to help with preparation, serving, and cleaning up.

Board members are invited to smaller fundraising and community events held throughout the year and they are strongly encouraged to attend at least two to three per year. We hope that board members will volunteer to serve occasional meals at Shepherd’s Table if their schedules permit. Additionally, the Shepherd’s Table Development and Communications team provides outreach resources, scripts, and targeted campaigns to include board members in their fundraising efforts, while providing support to those participating.
